Winter Tyres

Many motorists don’t realise the safety benefits of fitting winter tyres to their vehicle.  General tyres are not designed to work in heavy snow or ice. Once the temperature drops below 7 °c traction can be improved and stopping distances reduced with the fitting of winter tyres.

Winter tyres are made with a unique rubber compound that doesn’t harden in cold weather and includes specific tread designs. The compound keeps tyres flexible in the cold and the combination of bespoke tread gives drivers much more grip and control when temperatures drop below 7 degrees °c. More grip also means shorter stopping distances.

Contrary to popular belief winter tyres are not just for driving in snow. They are designed to improve safety and increase performance in all cold weather conditions including damp and wet roads, as well as snow and ice.

Winter tyres provide a grip on the road that cannot be matched by a summer tyre. The difference in stopping distances of winter and summer tyres can be up to 8 metres or two car lengths on a snow covered road driving at 50km/h.

Alternatively, All Season Tyres can be used as a compromise to having both Winter and Summer Tyres, but if living in a rural area or an area prone to ice, we recommend investing in separate sets of tyres for both seasons.

You can use our Tyre Hotel to store your spare set and then we will swap them over when the seasons change.

Vehicle Tyres FAQ’s

What do the numbers on the tyre sidewall mean?

The numbers on a tyre sidewall represent its size, construction, and performance ratings. For example, 215/60R16 indicates the tyre width in millimetres (215), aspect ratio if the width (60), and rim diameter in inches (16).

How often should I check my tyre pressures?

It’s good practice to check tyre pressures at least once a month or before long trips. Low pressure can affect fuel efficiency and safety, while overinflation can lead to uneven wear and reduced traction.

What is the recommended tyre pressure for my car?

The recommended tyre pressure is usually found in the owner’s manual or on a sticker inside the driver’s side door jamb. It’s essential to follow these recommendations for optimal performance and safety.

How long do tyres typically last?

The lifespan of tyres can vary based on factors like driving habits, road conditions, and tyre maintenance. On average, good quality tyres can last between 25,000 to 50,000 miles. Regular inspection and maintenance help extend their life.

What is the significance of tyre tread depth?

Tyre tread depth is crucial for maintaining traction and dispersing rainwater. The legal minimum tread depth is typically 1.6mm. However, it’s safer to replace tyres when they reach 3mm for better performance, especially in wet or snowy conditions.

Why do tyres lose pressure in cold weather?

Cold temperatures cause the air inside tyres to contract, leading to a decrease in pressure. It’s normal for tyres to lose a pound or two of pressure when the weather gets colder. Regularly checking and adjusting tyre pressure is essential in colder seasons.

Can I mix different tyre brands on my car?

While it’s not recommended, it’s possible in certain situations. Ideally, tyres should be the same brand, model, and size (normally) on all four wheels to ensure uniform performance, handling, and safety.

What causes tyre vibrations?

Vibrations in the steering wheel or car at certain speeds can be due to imbalanced, buckled or mis-aligned wheels. Other potential causes could be issues with suspension components or out of shape tyres.

Are there specific tyres for different seasons, and why is it important to use them?

Yes, there are tyres designed for specific seasons: all-season, summer, and winter tyres. All-season tyres offer decent performance in various conditions but might not excel in extreme weather. Summer tyres provide excellent warm-weather performance but might struggle in cold or snowy conditions. Winter tyres, on the other hand, are specifically engineered to offer superior traction and handling in snow, ice, and cold temperatures, making them crucial for safety in harsh winter conditions. Using the appropriate seasonal tyres enhances safety, handling, and performance, catering to the specific weather challenges each season brings.

Please note that these answers provide general guidance. Specific recommendations might vary based on your car’s make and model, so consulting your vehicle’s manual or a professional mechanic is always advisable for precise information.

  • I visited for Hunter Computerised wheel alignment and had a great experience. I recently bought a new car (2011 Audi A5) which I thought had faulty steering (it was stiff, pulling to left and steering wheel off centre) so decided to seek advice. Was listened to and treated like an important customer and was given advice about before I committed to anything. Once booked in I had everything explained throughout the process from a master technician and was shown the problem on the Hunter diagnostic screen. It was like being at a private medical clinic! Alignment was done and servotronic steering was reset – solving all issues and making a very happy customer indeed. Recommended for professional service and solving steering issues using the best equipment in the business.

  • One of the few times in life I am genuinely surprised by customer service. These guys looked at my car within 5 minutes when I had not made an appointment. I was expecting them to say I needed 2 new tyres and try to rip me off like most places do. However they repaired my puncture for just £20. I was in and out in 30 minutes and there were plenty of other customers. Highly recommended!

  • Excellent and stress free is the only way to describe my experience here.  I would highly recommend this place, all customers are invited through to the workshop to look at the car with the tyre fitter, he calmly showed me the worn three tyres without anyone even suggesting work was needed.  This business is run without the high sales pressure put on you at certain quick fit centres to change parts that are in good condition, this was confirmed by my mechanic who examined my wheel bearings up on the ramp straight after quick fit.   You can relax in a comfortable lounge with quality coffee you would expect to buy elsewhere.
