In our previous blog, we detailed our ‘Face Lift’ wheel refurbishment option. Now, let’s dive into our second option: the ‘Face and Inside’ refurbishment. We’ll explain what this option includes and when it’s best to use it.
What Do We Mean by ‘Face and Inside’?
Our ‘Face and Inside’ refurbishment covers everything included in the ‘Face Lift’ option and more! When looking at a wheel, you can generally break it down into two sections: the face and the inside. Some wheels have a large face coverage with little of the inside barrel showing, while others have thin spokes that leave large parts of the barrel visible. Opting for this refurbishment will give your wheel a complete makeover, making it look brand new again. If your entire wheel is starting to look worn or you want a colour change, this option is for you!
When to Choose ‘Face and Inside’ Refurbishment?
The turnaround time for this process largely depends on the condition and age of the wheel. A wheel with corrosion or lacquer peeling will take longer to refurbish compared to a wheel with a stable substrate. Older wheels require a more intensive process, including chemical stripping to completely remove the existing substrates before starting the refurbishment and re-coating process. This process can take around 2-3 days from start to finish. For vehicles aged 0-6 years, the wheels likely won’t need such an intrusive process, resulting in a quicker turnaround time, sometimes within a day.
The Process
The process starts differently depending on the wheel’s condition. Here’s how we do it:
- Preparation: We strip the tyres from the wheels and remove the valve stems. We then check each wheel for buckles.
- Cleaning/Chemical Dipping: Depending on the condition, we either chemically strip the wheel or thoroughly clean it to remove any brake dust or dirt.
- Damage Removal: We sandblast the wheel and remove any damage using sandpaper, aluminium filler or weld.
- Priming and Painting: We prime and paint the face and inside of the wheel to the desired colour using our state-of-the-art robot.
- Lacquering: The entire wheel is then lacquered to either a gloss, satin, or matte finish.
- Curing: We heat the wheel to 60 degrees, let it cool down, then refit and rebalance the tyre.
