Welcome back to our wheel refurbishment series! In this final instalment, we dive into the diamond cut wheel refurbishment option. By the end of this blog, you’ll understand what this process entails and when you should choose this route for your wheels.
What is a Diamond Cut Finish?
For those unfamiliar with the term, a diamond cut finish is a specialised technique often considered an upgrade by car manufacturers. While some enthusiasts might know all about it, let’s break down what makes this finish unique.
When a vehicle rolls off the production line, it often comes with wheel finish options—one of which is the diamond cut. This finish involves an additional step beyond painting the wheel. After painting, we place the wheel on a lathe and precisely skim tiny amounts of metal from its face. This process reveals a polished, two-tone look that sets diamond cut wheels apart from their painted counterparts.
Identifying a Diamond Cut Wheel
To identify a diamond cut wheel, examine its surface. A diamond cut wheel typically has a raw metal finish or a distinctive two-tone appearance, where the face of the wheel differs in colour from the rest. Here are some images to help you visualise the difference between a painted wheel and a diamond cut wheel:
Our Diamond Cut Process
Our diamond cut option complements our existing ‘face lift’ or ‘face and inside’ refurbishment options. For details on these processes, please refer to our previous blogs. Here’s a step-by-step overview of how we achieve the diamond cut finish:
- Preparation: We begin by taking the wheel through the initial refurbishment stages, either ‘face lift’ or ‘face and inside.’
- Lathe: We then place the prepared wheel on our state-of-the-art lathe, equipped with the latest laser technology.
- Laser Scanning: The laser precisely scans the wheel’s surface to determine the tool path.
- Cutting: Using a diamond tool tip, we meticulously remove fractions of a milimeter from the wheel’s face, eliminating all surface damage.
- Completion: The wheel now gleams with a brand-new, factory-fresh appearance.
Although we’ve finished the diamond cutting stage, the wheel continues along the finishing process detailed in our earlier blogs.
Things to Note
Diamond cut wheels generally cost more to refurbish than painted wheels due to the extra stage involved. Additionally, manufacturers design diamond cut wheels with a limited lifespan, ensuring they maintain structural integrity even after multiple refurbishments. If the damage exceeds the cuttable life, we might need to consider other processes, and in some cases, replacement could be the only option.
